Emergency services responded to a call of a structure fire at 1371 Shantz Station Road just after 12:30 p.m. on Mar. 2. Forty firefighters from five stations, Maryhill, Breslau, Conestogo, Elmira and St. Jacobs, were called to scene. Around 60,000 gallons of water was required to extinguish the fire, trucked in from Menno Street
The building, a wood shop/shed, was used to store ATVs, snowmobiles, a trailer and lawn tractor. The damage is estimated at $300,000, covering the house, the shop and its contents. The cause of the fire is still undetermined, and officials say there was nobody home at the time.

A detached garage was leveled in a fire Wednesday afternoon that brought fire crews from across Woolwich to a property on Shantz Station Road, close to the Cambridge boundary at Kossuth Road. Reports of a barn fire had tankers dispatched from Maryhill, Conestogo, St. Jacobs and even Elmira in case more water and manpower were needed. Crews remains on the scene later in the afternoon, with the cause of the blaze still to be determined.
