Competitive swimmers, including local members of the Region of Waterloo Swim Club, can breathe a little easier now that federal and provincial contributions of $1 million each will extend by 15 to 20 years the operational life of Wilfrid Laurier University’s 50-metre pool.
The facility, the only one of its kind in the region, was slated to be closed last year due to the high cost of repairs. But community response saw $2.2 million raised by the university, students, aquatic groups, the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener, and individual donors.
Community groups use approximately 60 per cent of the pool’s scheduled operation time.
