Woolwich Community Services is holding an information session Feb. 26 for people who want to learn about managing and preventing debt.
The session isn’t just for people in financial difficulty; it’s also for those who are looking for information on managing their household finances.
“Hopefully a little bit of prevention about how to keep afloat in the tough economic times ahead,” said Kelly Christie, community resource coordinator at WCS.
Heather Cudmore of Catholic Family Credit Counseling will be speaking about good spending habits, how to avoid living off credit cards, and managing debt.
“I’m hoping people will realize it is for everyone,” Christie said. “Some people have been laid off, some people lost overtime hours, some people are waiting for EI. My fear is it’s only going to get worse.”
She’s noticed an increase in the number of people coming in to check the job board and use the computers to job search. Staff at WCS are anticipating an increase in the number of people coming in for food hampers and birthday presents.
“Your child’s having a birthday and where are you going to find the money for that gift when you’re trying to pay the bills and rent and food costs?”
Registration isn’t required, Christie said, but if people want to make sure a topic is covered they can contact her at 519-669-5139.
“If people have specific questions that they know they want to address but they might be shy about it, they can call and let me know what it is and I can make sure it gets asked on their behalf.”
The information session will be held Feb. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Woolwich Community Services on Arthur Street in Elmira.
