Have you ever turned on the television to watch the Amazing Race and after seeing the first team cross the finish line after a series of challenges thought, ‘I could do that’?
Next month you will have the chance to test your skills, and go up against other teams from throughout the township in the fourth annual Wild Woolwich Challenge, to be held May 1, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Teams of two will navigate Elmira on foot with the help of cryptic clues to 10 community locations. At each location, teams will complete a task or participate in a challenge – they can only move on to the next step once they have completed the task at hand.
“A day like this is just a lot of fun,” Woolwich Community Services’ Kelly Christie said of the event. “It’s a bit challenging, and it’s something really different.”
Participants must pay a $15 fee, payable at the time of registration. This fee is waived, however, if a participant pledges more than $100. Each participant is requested to collect a minimum of $100 in pledges, to be handed in to WCS office by Apr. 23.
Prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place finishers, as well as to the participants who submit more than $200 in pledges.
The grand prize of an IBM laptop donated by Reality Bytes is given out to a contestant who has raised more than $200, and whose name has been chosen from the ballot box of other top pledgers. Participants can increase their chances of winning by raising more money. One ballot is given once a person raises $200, and another ballot is given with every additional $50 raised.
Funds raised will support the community programs of Woolwich Community Services, including food hampers, the job board, ‘The Kids and I’ resource centre, and family violence prevention, among many others.
“The money raised goes towards such great programs,” explained Christie. “And it’s an absolute blast.”
