Two people are dead and another airlifted to hospital following a collision Wednesday morning involving a car and a transport truck at the intersection of Floradale Road and Line 86 just outside of Elmira.
Around 9:20 a.m. emergency crews were called to the scene after the eastbound truck, carrying a load of cattle, struck the driver’s side of the northbound Chevrolet Malibu attempting to cross the intersection. The driver of the car, 82-year-old Mary Poschner of Waterloo and a passenger, 76-year-old Maria Rauh also of Waterloo, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
A second passenger of the car, a 73-year-old Kitchener woman, was taken by air ambulance to Hamilton General Hospital with major injuries. Fire crews had to use the Jaws of Life to pry the wreckage away from the woman, who was sitting in the rear passenger seat at the time of the crash.
Large black skid marks were visible on the road following the crash, and both vehicles ended up in a farmer’s field on the north side of Church Street. A police investigation indicated that the driver of the Malibu failed to yield to the truck, which had the right of way.
The driver of the truck, a 45-year-old Elmira man, was uninjured in the collision and the livestock did not sustain any known injuries, said Inspector Greg Lamport.
Police do not anticipate laying any charges, and the surrounding roads were closed for more than six hours while police concluded their investigation.
