Woolwich and Wellesley townships contributed nine members to a list of almost 3,600 people in the region who earned more than $100,000 on the public payroll in 2013.
Across the province, the list — which includes doctors, nurses, teachers, police and firefighters in addition to civil servants — grew by 11 per cent to 97,796 names, up from 88,412 in 2012. The provincially mandated salary information was released last week.
In Woolwich, chief administrative officer David Brenneman was the highest paid of township employees, taking in $141,820.61 plus taxable benefits of $799.47. Director of engineering and planning Dan Kennaley was paid $109,585.63 plus $799.47 in taxable benefits, the same as director of finance/treasurer Richard Petherick and director of council and information services/clerk Christine Broughton. Township fire chief Rick Pedersen received $109,585.63, while director of recreation and facilities Karen Makela got $102,861.36 and $763.56 in taxable benefits.
Manager of engineering Richard Sigurdson is the newest entrant to the list, taking home $102,033.78 plus $711.45. Public works supervisor Barry Baldasaro came in at $100,302.02 and $691.47.
In Wellesley, chief administrative officer Will McLaughlin was the sole member of the list, earning $114,908.95 plus $565.94 in taxable benefits.
At the Region of Waterloo, there were 225 people among those paid more than $100,000 by taxpayers. The list includes Chair Ken Seiling at $158,826.96 and $3,044.24. Top earners were Liana Nolan, commissioner, public health/medical officer of health, $298,816.66 and $1,133.40; CAO Mike Murray, $263,355.12 and $13,301.16; Hsiu-Li Wang, associate medical officer of health, $261,185.20 and $2,031.56; and Thomas Schmidt, commissioner, transportation & environmental services, $205,680.86 and $947.64.
The Waterloo Regional Police provided 383 names to the list, led by chief Matt Torgian at $247,395.07 plus $13,268.94 in taxable benefits; superintendent Anne McConnell, $235,255.76 and $3,522.68; deputy chief Steve Beckett, $219,509.32 and $11,398.76 and superintendant Adrian Darmon, $202,902.75 and $10,876.81.
There were 414 employees of the Waterloo Region District School Board on the Sunshine List, while the Waterloo Catholic District School Board contributed 145.
