Fine drinks and good times are sure to be had this weekend with the Shine a Little Light event being hosted at the Woolwich Memorial. Event-goers will have the opportunity to sample some of the top-shelf creations of craft brewers and wineries from across Ontario.
While the chance to sample a variety of locally created spirits is a reason in and of itself to attend, the event is actually raising money for a good cause. All the proceeds from the evening will be going towards children’s programs sponsored by the Grand River Hospital Foundation.
“We want to bring the community out for a fun afternoon where the proceeds are going to such an important cause,” said Greg Kaut, coordinator for the Shine a Little Light fundraiser.
No drink would be worth having, however, without good music and a pleasant atmosphere to accompany it, and to that end the Shine a Little Light event is promising to bring a little rock and roll and country into the mix.
The campaign was spurred on by the success of another similar event held by the Elmira-based Murphy’s Law distillery last November, with more than $5,000 raised. Rather than write a cheque, the money was put towards the purchase of 400 plush teddy bears that were delivered to the Grand River Hospital just before Christmas, along with nearly $4,000 in food vouchers.
The goal ultimately, explains Kaut, is to support kids and parents visiting the hospital by making their oftentimes daunting stays as easy and relaxing as possible.
A diverse selection six producers of libations – including three distillers and three wineries – will be on hand to share their fine creations. Amongst the many vendors available will be the St. Jacobs-based Block 3 Brewery, Maple Brewing, Murphy’s Law Distillery in Elmira, Junction 56 Distillery, Diamond Estates Winery and Cox Creek Cellars.
The event is being held June 2 at the Woolwich Memorial Centre from 2 to 10 p.m. and is, of course, only for those 19-plus. Tickets are $20 per person if purchased in advance, and $25 at the door. For early ticket sales, head to www.shinealittlelight.org.
