An all-too-familiar scene, fire crews from St. Jacobs, Elmira, Conestogo, and Breslau were called to a fire at the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market on Thursday afternoon, this time to the roof of the Peddlar’s Village.
The fire was called in after dark smoke was seen coming from the building while a contractor was working on the roof. The building was evacuated. An hour after it was called in, firefighters were busy ripping off parts of the roof with chainsaws and axes, removing insulation, and dousing the interior with water, while many curious market-goers watched and took photos.
The Peddlar’s Village is housed in a different building from the main market structure, itself destroyed in a 2013 fire. The replacement market building, which opened last year, was not affected by Thursday’s fire.
