While the leaves are changing and the temperatures are cooling down, the local art scene is heating up with 15 artists opening their studios to the public.
For the weekend of Oct. 25, The Kissing Bridge Trail Studio Tour is back. With artists opening up their workspaces from Bloomingdale to Winterbourne to Elmira, art lovers will have plenty to see.
Shirley Frey is one of the artists featured on this year’s tour. Her media of choice? Paint and any canvas she can get her brush on.
“I do some oils, some acrylics. I paint on canvases, but also almost any other object with a flat surface. I do milk cans, saw blades and I paint on wood, fabric, fungus, tins, old coffee pots,” she said.
The subject matter she depicts in her pieces isn’t limited to a single category.
“I do all kinds. Just the other week, I did a couple of still-lifes that I had set up myself with fruit in it and a small china pitcher in it. I have done quite a bit of scenery, too. I like doing local stuff. Now with more experience, I like taking my own pictures and painting those rather than taking some other picture that I have seen.”
Frey has been a stop on the Kissing Bridge Studio Tour around 10 times, and she really enjoys being able to showcase her work to guests.
“I am just a hobby artist,” she said. “I am not full time at all and (the tour) gives you a chance to show your work off. Just meeting the people. Just come on in and enjoy if you like to look at art. Just come and enjoy the works.”
The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 24 and 25 and is free for all art lovers. Frey’s studio is only open on Saturday, but to get full list of the participating artists, their medium and locations, visit. www.kbtstudiotour.ca.
