Planting trees near streams has big benefits for the environment. These living green zones protect water quality and help stabilize eroding banks. That’s why ReForest Woolwich, the local non-profit aiming to increase the Township’s tree canopy, is offering free stream buffer planting for residents.
Anyone whose property has a stream near a roadway, currently lacks good tree cover, and has a planting area away from livestock activities qualifies for the program. Property owners must also plan to keep the trees and will have their site assessed to ensure the proposed planting will not negatively impact the existing ecosystem.
“What the stream buffer project is basically planting trees along streamways that intersect a roadway. So if you have a stream that intersects a road, we can plant it to a certain distance away from the roadway, and that’s just due to our funding requirements,” explained Braedon Witt, ReForest Woolwich’s operations manager.
