Loving father of Leopold “Der Kleine” (the late Cynthia) Gaessler, Ernst (Joyce) Gaessler, the late Rita (in infancy), and Ella (Dennis) Dusome. Leopold leaves behind his treasured grandchildren, Graham (Bridget) Gaessler; Kelly Gaessler (Brian Kyle), Stephen Gaessler; Derek (Jenna) Dusome, and Christine (Kyle) Parsons and great-grandchildren Stephen, Devon, Lydia, Hope Gaessler; Benjamin, Alexander Kyle; and Lila Parsons. Leopold was born in Neu- Nikolajewka, Bessarabia, Romania. In 1940 the German villagers were relocated to Austria until 1941, when they were relocated to Poland. In September 1944, they fled to the west as the Russians advanced. In 1950 Leopold immigrated to Canada aboard the Beaverbrae where he met Maria and fell in love. They were married March 29, 1952 and built a life on a stretch of land between Conestogo and St. Jacobs. There they raised their family. They later built a cottage at Point Clark, Lake Huron, where they spent their summers. Leopold was known to be the first one in the lake and talked to everyone on the beach where he made many friends. The cottage was his happy place. Leopold excelled at crokinole and horseshoes, winning many trophies and championships holding the Ontario title in crokinole for many years. He was a longtime member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Conestogo. A heartfelt thank you to Highland Place Retirement Home for their kind and compassionate care of dad. Visitation will be held at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 131 Flax Mill Dr., Conestogo, on Friday, February 7, 2025 from 1-1:45 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery, followed by a reception in the church hall.
