Just as poppies begin to bloom on our fall jackets, Remembrance Day ceremonies start in Woolwich this weekend at Memory Gardens Reception Centre and Cemetery east of Breslau.
Veterans, families and local branches of the Canadian Legion will visit today (Saturday) for a small parade and decoration service in honour of the veterans laid to rest in the cemetery.
“It’s quite the thing to drive in there and see all of the Canadian flags on all of the graves,” said Elmira Legion president Karen Schieck.
The following week, Elmira’s Ladies Auxiliary will host a tea and bake sale on November 9 at the Elmira Legion starting at 1 p.m. Entrance is $2 each. There will be a raffle for grocery boxes and a bake table.
The Elmira Remembrance Day parade will take place November 10, 3 p.m., leading to the cenotaph on Arthur Street. Families, and local officials and members from other branches of the Legion will be laying wreaths during the ceremony and a bus will be provided for veterans during the lengthy procession.
“Weather permitting we’ll march from the branch to the cenotaph,” she said.
The Remembrance Day dinner will be held on the next day at the Elmira Legion.
