An Elmira Sugar Kings charity game in honour of the late Richard Rank won the backing of Woolwich council, which this week agreed to waive rental fees at the WMC on February 1.
Net proceeds from the match will go to the Friends of Hockey, a local organization that provides hockey equipment and support to families that might not otherwise be able to afford to have their children enrolled in minor hockey. The charity was one supported by Rank, a township employee and local sports booster who died just over a year ago.
Ron Hackett, a member of the hockey club’s board of directors, requested the waiving of the fees – about $750 for ice time and $130 for the use of the community room. Along with ticket sales, the players will be wearing special sweaters that will be auctioned off after the game.
He extended an invitation to the new mayor and council to attend the afternoon match against the Cambridge Winter Hawks.
“I hope to see you at the charity game … and bidding high on the sweaters,” he laughed.
