In the third partnership between The Commercial Tavern and West Montrose Farms since the start of 2016, Paul Weber and Peter Tillich are teaming up for an afternoon of country music and trees with Pine-ing for Summer.
On Apr. 30, Weber and Tillich invite you to join them at the local venue to celebrate the end of winter, and the beginning of warmer temperatures along with a little bit of country twang.
“We are welcoming the good weather, while giving people something they can take home and plant. It will just be a day of country music with good friends, good food and just a great atmosphere of fun,” said Weber.
With the $10 admission, country music-lovers will receive a Canadian Native white pine tree to take and plant at home.
“It is the beginning of the nice weather and it is a celebration of that, and we are going to be giving away a native white pine, which is a very popular tree,” said Tillich of West Montrose Farms. “A lot of people like pine trees and they look great. A lot of customers ask for them.”
Weber on vocals and guitar, will be joined on stage by his brother Mike on steel guitar, his sister Susan on bass and vocals, and a few other members of the musical Weber family. Tillich will even take the stage for a few tunes himself.
“I just like singing to begin with, and I enjoy singing with them because they are just a good group. They are really a professional singing group and being up there with them. What can I say? We have to keep The Commercial going because it has just really good country music in this area,” said Tillich.
For the first Commercial Tavern-West Montrose Farms joint event, Weber and Tillich gave away Baby Blue Spruce and at Christmastime, gave away white spruce trees. Tillich says it is now the time for pine trees to go home with music fans.
“I have been growing trees, selling trees, and promoting people planting trees for I don’t even know how long, both for beautification and for the environment. I enjoy it, and I plan on doing this three times a year forever if I live that long,” said Tillich. “We are also getting native trees back into the landscape, and we are going to have fun doing it.”
There is something special about The Commercial Tavern for Tillich. It is one of the only places around that features his favourite brand of country music – the golden oldies.
“It is real, traditional country music, not like newer stuff,” he said. “I go way back and like things like Sons of the Pioneers and way, way back in the 1950s, and Paul is keeping that going and there are a lot of people who like that kind of music, especially those who are on the vintage side.”
The tree events have been popular for Weber and Tillich, filling seats at The Commercial and even bringing in some new faces.
“What is really special about it all is that I really enjoy doing these things. It is a nice thing that gets people into the Commercial, I am really interested in keeping Paul’s place full and by giving people at tree, it brings new people in that might not have gone in before,” said Tillich.
Pine-ing for Summer starts up at 3 p.m., with doors open at 2:30 p.m. on Apr. 30.
