Hundreds of motorcycles rumbled through Wellesley Village Saturday, as beautiful weather and the chance to help some area charities brought riders out to the second annual Bikefest in July.
Some 1,000 people passed through the doors of the Wellesley arena July 10, said Ron Hergott of The Cycle Works in Wellesley, who, with the help of a host of volunteers, organized the event.
Featuring a poker run (about 260 bikes took part this year), a swap meet, a show-and-shine contest and live music performed by blues singer Cheryl Lescomb, Bikefest is an event that could grow with each successive year, Hergott said.
“We think there’s room in this area for something like this. We hope to build on it every year,” he said. “It’s worked out really well. I’ve had good support from the people here.”
Although he’s still crunching the numbers, Hergott expects to provide about $3,500 to three charitable groups: the Wilmot Family Resource Centre in New Hamburg, Ray of Hope in Kitchener and the Wellesley backpack program.
