Passed away peacefully with the loving support of her family on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at Barnswallow Place Care Community, at the age of 100. Betty is now reunited with her beloved husband Eddie (2013). Devoted mother of Colleen and Ron Wike, Beverly Gagliano, and Shannon and Dan Shillington. Adoring grandmother to Casey Wike; Pietro Gagliano, Luca Gagliano, John-Paul Gagliano, and Giuseppe and Cristina Gagliano; Leah Shillington and James Shillington; and great-grandmother to Sal and Eve Gagliano. Betty was the last surviving member of the Smith family, having been predeceased by her parents Joseph and Sarah (Reesor) Smith, three brothers, and one sister in infancy. Betty’s family was her greatest joy, and she created a warm and welcoming home that she ran with grace, efficiency, and love in abundance. She was a dedicated member of Elmira Mennonite Church, leading a life of faith and service to others. Betty shared a name and birthday with the Queen, and was an avid follower of the monarchy. She was also an accomplished artist who infused colour and creativity into her paintings, quilts, and gardens. Betty’s humble, gentle nature touched the lives of many, and she leaves behind a legacy of selflessness and love. A brief time of visitation will take place on Friday, December 20, 2024 at Elmira Mennonite Church, 58 Church St. W., from 10 until 10:45 a.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. with interment following in the adjoining cemetery. All are welcome back to the church after the interment for refreshments and fellowship. Donations to MCC or Mennonite Disaster Service Canada would be appreciated by the family, and may be made through the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira. A special thank you to the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital and Barnswallow Place for their compassionate care of Betty.
