It is with great love and gratitude of a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of John Basler on the morning of December 14, 2024, surrounded by his devoted family. At 89 years of age, John leaves behind a legacy of kindness, wisdom, and joy that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. Born on May 10, 1935, in Maryborough Township, Ontario, John shared 68 extraordinary years of marriage with the love of his life, Alice (Ruth) Basler, a partnership that was the heart of his world. Together, they raised three daughters, Donna (John) Markarian, Debra Basler, and Bonnie (Mark) Bleskie, who carry forward his values of hard work, compassion, and resilience. John was a proud and doting “Papa” to his grandchildren, Paloma Forwell, Kara Bleskie, and Corrin Bleskie (Chris Hamilton), who cherish his stories, his laughter, and the endless encouragement he provided. Born to John and Sarah (Tobin) Basler, John grew up in a lively, close-knit family. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings Marie Linden (William), Jacqueline Morrissey (Jack), Theresa Basler, Eileen Huck (John), Mary Patricia Basler (in infancy), sister-in-law Sandra Basler, as well as brothers George Basler (Sharon), James Basler (Diane), and his beloved niece, Christine Seiler. John will be lovingly remembered by his surviving brother, Tom Basler, and his extended family of nieces, nephews, and countless friends. John worked for 39 years at Uniroyal Chemical in Elmira, where his colleagues recall him as an exceptional mentor, and friend. After retirement, John channeled his endless curiosity and skill into carpentry, crafting meaningful projects and building many additions to his favourite retreat, the cottage at Jack Lake (1983) – that will continue to be lovingly known as Basler’s Cove. John cherished time at Basler’s Cove, which became a sanctuary for family and friends. A lover of nature, he found joy in gardening, the call of loons, and the companionship of animals, especially his faithful dog, Mollie, who will rest beside him. A man of many talents, John was a self-taught master of machinery and a gourmet cook, delighting his family with his annual culinary creations like his famous Christmas cake, sausages, and sauerkraut - traditions that live on in his children and grandchildren. He was an avid reader, a history enthusiast, and an endless source of wisdom. With an unforgettable wit, a warm singing voice, and a gift for storytelling, John had a remarkable ability to light up any room. John’s passion for life was evident in everything he did, from coaching Woolwich Minor Hockey to leading the Elmira Rod and Gun Club as president. He loved teaching the Hunter Safety Course for the Ministry of Natural Resources and enjoyed 42 years of camaraderie as a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. John was a proud farmer, and strived to follow in his father’s (Black Jack) footsteps by perfecting the art of custom thrashing, sawing and carpentry. These skills learned by his father allowed him to leave his legacy by building the large Celtic cross that will stand forever in the Elmira cemetery that was donated to the Township by the Ruth Family. Alice and John also worked together to preserve many sculptures and cabinetry that will remain in St. Teresa of Avila Church in Elmira. John and Alice shared a love of travel, exploring destinations like Hawaii, Alaska, and Arizona together, as well as embarking on road trip adventures to many more provinces and states. John’s legacy is one of kindness, leadership, and a deep love for his family, friends, and community. He will be remembered as a legend whose stories and spirit will live on for generations. Above all, John’s greatest joy came from his family. He loved nothing more than a lively, full dinner table, surrounded by the people he cherished most, sharing stories and laughter. His legacy of love, hard work, and boundless generosity will continue to inspire all who knew him. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to celebrate John’s life with a visitation on Thursday, December 26, 2024, from 5-7 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira. A mass of Christian faith will be held at 11a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2024, at St. Teresa of Avila RC Church, 19 Flamingo Dr., Elmira. Private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory can be made to Hospice Waterloo Region through the funeral home.
When you hear the call of a loon, may it remind you of John’s laughter, love, and the light he brought into your life. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
