MPPs launch one-stop shopping website for businesses seeking assistance

Mike Harris

Businesses have been struggling for almost a year now as rules implemented by the provincial government to stem the spread of COVID-19 have forced them to close completely or move to some other – at times less financially supportive – means of work.

To help these struggling businesses survive, many provincial and federal grants have been created to help with everything from the costs of rent, personal protective equipment, and even ongoing and non-deferrable costs. While these have been out and available for some time, many businesses have still struggled finding the right supports for them.

To help with this, Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Mike Harris and Kitchener South-Hespeler MPP Amy Fee recently launched the Relief Within Reach Waterloo Region Website, an online venue where all available financial supports are curated so business owners can go to find everything they need in one place.

“This is something that we have been talking about for a little while, Amy Fee and I, getting kind of a one-stop shop put together where local businesses here in the community can come together, in one place and figure out what supports are there for them. Whether it be the provincial or federal government, we have both listed on the webpage. But I think most importantly, there are direct links right to the webpages and for the applications and all the eligibility criteria is clearly laid out and I think that it’s something that’s important for folks here in the region to be able to have at their disposal,” said Harris.

Harris says he hears from business owners that they want an easier way to find the available supports.

“I’m in contact with businesses regularly and I think one of the things that they had talked about was trying to find a clear and easy way to be able to understand what is available to them. And this also comes sort of through conversations with the different chambers of commerce here as well that we have in the region.”
