On Sunday, January 24th the Maryhill Knights of Columbus Council 6024 held their annual Basketball Free-Throw in the St. Boniface School Gym.
Young people from schools in Breslau, Conestogo, Foundation Christian School in Winterbourne, Koinonia Christian Fellowship School in Bloomingdale and St. John’s Kilmarnock were invited to participate. Twelve young people turned out for the competition.
The event began at 1:30 p.m. sharp with girls and boys from 9-14 years of age participating.
First place winners for the girls were Grace Baillargeon age 11 and Miranda Harris age 13. Winners for the boys were Gabriel Parronchi, John Patrick Milloy, Mitchell Hartman, Max Mazzetti, and John Elliott.
Second place winners were River Kobe, Ryan Bischof, Justin Feher, Logan Mazzetti, and Travis Terpstra.
Certificate of participation and a badge were presented to all the students and first place winners were presented with a basketball and a plaque which will have their names inscribed on them. These were presented by Knights of Columbus youth co-ordinator Gary Embro.
Second place winners won a door mini-basketball set.
When the students shot the first time they are given three practice shots and then they shoot 15 baskets to complete for council level.
These winners were asked to remain until all the students had completed in their particular age group. This time they were allowed five practice shots and had to shoot 25 baskets. These scores will now be sent to the District level.
There was excellent basketball played and it was wonderful watching parents and players alike clapping whenever players scored.
