Andrea Hasenpflug, playground coordinator, said the leaders all created their own crafts and activities this year. There are also weekly trips or special guests, depending on the theme. This week the theme is “Into the Wild, with a trip to African Lion Safari.

They also make lots of trips to the park and make good use of the outdoors. Other themes for the summer are “Mad Scientists,” “Blast from the Past,” “Worlds of Magic and Entertainment,” “Explorers of the Universe,” and “Sports Galore.”

The program is no longer divided into age-specific camps, but she said they’re trying to divide them into age-appropriate groups during activities. Children aged five to 12 years old are welcome.

They also run the same program in Breslau. There were 35 kids at the Elmira location and 20 in Breslau for the first week. The maximum is 40, one leader for every 10 children.

She said the program is important because it helps kids integrate from neighboring towns. They also make new friends and are kept busy all day.

More information can be found online at the township’s website, www.woolwich.ca, or by contacting the WMC.
