Historical Society May 2018 Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Historical Society of St. Boniface and Maryhill Community was held on Monday, May 28, 2018 at 7 p.m. in the Edward Halter Home.

SECRETARY – The Open House schedule for the Edward Halter Home has been reviewed. The first day is on Sunday Father’s Day June 17th  and will be open every Sunday until September 23rd which is also Heritage Day.    The house will be open from 1-4 p.m.  The inventory book will also be on the table for quick reference.

ARCHIVIST & GENEALOGY – Families researched were: Phil Hauser (Massel / Hurziger), Douglass Grant (Breslau Dolman Street), Susan Morris (Weiler), Judy Mendicino (Scheibel / Eggenweiler). Attended the Genealogical Fair on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Kitchener Public Library, and the Waterloo Historical Society and Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation combined meeting on Saturday, May 12th at the Waterloo Region Museum.

BIRTHDAY CLUB – Eight cards were sent during the past month.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE – During the recent storm the top storm bedroom window fell but didn’t  break.  It will be put back with better hardware.

CHURCH – There were   16 students from the parish who received their 1st Holy Communion on Sunday, May 6th.  Have gathered information on Sister Eleanor Olinski who celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday, May 29th.

COMMUNITY– Worked on history of Maryhill Mini-Mart, local Veterans & pictures of the Bloomingdale 4-H club.

FUNDRAISING – Fundraising letters were distributed.  There are $500 in total for Raffle prizes.  Cost of tickets will remain at $2 a ticket or 6 tickets for $10.  There will be 325 books printed.  The tickets will be sent out with the June newsletter.

MEMBERSHIP –  We have 312 Member households which includes 14 Ex Officio Memberships, 2 Annual Membership, 310 Lifetime memberships (incl. Ex Officio)

PROGRAM –  has been set for Canada Day.  Beginning with Mass 10 am then at  11 am will be the Raising of Flag, singing of “O Canada”, introductions and short speeches. Horse drawn wagon rides with narrated tours of the village will take place at 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m.  and 2:30 p.m.  There will be a K. of C. BBQ at  12 noon.  Cake and water will also be available.  There will be children’s crafts / face painting during the day.  The Maryhill & Ariss Lions club and Maryhill Fire Department will both have displays as well as an antique display.  Live music will also be enjoyed.

PUBLICATIONS – The newsletter is scheduled to go out on June 15th .

RESOURCE CENTRE –  Working on NG Journal – Tuesday, 9 January 1923. A book – Chrome: The History of Kuntz Electroplating has been received.  Several Schmuck relations have toured the cemetery and the Edward Halter Home recently.

SCHOOL  – On Sunday May 27 a special mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. with students from St. Boniface and St. David’s High School.  The history of the school was read and this history will be printed as an insert in the church bulletin at a later date.

WAYSIDE CROSSES   – Will be checking on them shortly.  The Klein cross has been revamped and is looking very nice.

WEBSITE CO-ORDINATOR – Is coming along very nicely.
