On Monday, November 9th the Bloomingdale Women’s Institute welcomed as their guest speaker Greg Berchard who is the Executive Director of Elmira District Community Living and is also the Executive Director of the Elmira & District Housing Association. He spoke to the ladies about the services they provide.
He mentioned that they work with people from Elmira and the Waterloo Region with intellectual disabilities from age 18 to seniors and on to palliative care . They currently support 80 people with residential care and assisted living, have a 16 bed in their Assisted Living Centre and employ 120 full and part time staff.
They currently have 2 apartment buildings and plans are underway to build several more, which would house 4 – 6 residents in their own apartments along with student social workers who live on the site to provide support. Thanks to the support from family members, friends, recreational support in the community and technical support these individuals are able to live independently and have a good quality of life. Staff is paid only when needed so this type of program saves financially rather than having 24 hour paid staff like the would have in a Group Home. He showed a video with the happy residents and student support in their new building.
The Elmira District Community Living and Housing Association are grateful for the many donors in the community which allows them to build housing instead of depending on government funding.
Elinor Rau and Mary LeGault presented him with lap quilts which the ladies from the Institute made for some of the residents.
