Lions bingo puts up numbers for gymnastics

The Woolwich Gymnastics Club got a boost from the Elmira Lions Club’s fundraiser bingo this month.

The Lions Club hosts bingo each Thursday evening at their hall at 40 South St. W. in Elmira, keeping some of the money to support their own events, while distributing much of the proceeds to local youth groups and sports organizations.

On April 17, they advertised the bingo session as a fundraiser specifically for the gymnastics club, resulting in a good turnout and some $1,400 for the group.

“They brought out 40-50 people that evening which almost doubled our usual turnout,” Elmira Lions Club member Rod Martin said. “They had approached us about it and we were happy to support them”

Typically, the money from the Lions Club bingo goes into a general fund, before it is later allocated to a local organization.

But hosting a single cause fundraiser is advantageous because the group involved can help get people to come out to play, Martin explained.

“Obviously the more people out, the greater the donation will be. So I guess the lesson here is that if a group is looking for fundraising, they can approach us and go about it the way the gymnastics club did.”

For its part, the Woolwich Gymnastics Club was thrilled with the result.

“We had a really good turnout, people were excited to take part to support the club,” coach Maria Code said, noting the funds will likely go towards new equipment for their gym at 97 Earl Martin Dr. in Elmira. “It’s a big deal, when you consider for some of the mats we use can cost upwards of $800.”

The Lions Club of Elmira bingo goes Thursday nights at 7 p.m. For more information, contact 519-572-2669.
