Elmira was a hive of athletic activity Tuesday, as EDSS hosted its annual Tinman Triathlon, with competitors taking over local streets and trails.

More than 450 participants from 21 different schools biked, swam and ran through the three stages of the event

“We had a great turnout this year,” said Laurie Murray, organizer of the event. “I am glad to announce that we had no major issues this year beyond the few minor road rashes from cyclists falling and a couple of kids got a little overheated because of the heat.”

Pulling off the event was a team effort, she said, acknowledging the crew of staff and student volunteers who helped along the course, giving directions and handing out water.

David Remus from Huron Heights competes in the bike stage.

“We owe a lot to them for a successful day,” said Murray. “Their help is what made our event so great.”
EDSS had some solid finishes by the end of the day.

Cass Frey came in sixth place in the senior boys’ race with a time of 1:08:10 and Meaghan Mechler placed eighth in the senior girls’ category with a time of 1:24:21.

Emily Ahier, Maddie Holman and Paige Nossa finished second overall in the student triathlon relay with a time of 55:59.

EDSS placed third in the staff triathlon relay, a team made up of Janice Harper, John Swatridge and Sue Totske timed in at 1:13:32.

Merzi Dastoor place seventh with 1:11:03 and Murray broke into the top ten of the staff triathlon with a time of 1:13:19.
