Jim McLeod’s family had no idea what to expect when they organized a fundraising walk in his memory, but they certainly weren’t expecting the turnout they got.

The unofficial total for All In 4 Jim, held May 24, was $48,000, with a few more donations still to come in.

“We were shocked,” said McLeod’s daughter Krista Sandelli. “We never thought it would be anywhere near that much.”

McLeod lost a battle with cancer two years ago at age 58. He was involved in local sports for many years, as a minor hockey coach and equipment manager for the Elmira Sugar Kings and later the Canadian sledge hockey team. Members of both those teams were among the 250 people who walked 3.5 kilometres along the Lions Trail last Sunday.

McLeod was also involved with plans for the new recreation facility in Elmira, and pushed for it to include a second ice surface. The money raised will go toward the Jim McLeod Memorial Arena in the Woolwich Memorial Centre now under construction.
