Elmira cubs visit the Observer office

The Elmira cub scouts visited the Observer office on Tuesday evening to learn about newspaper publishing, camera equipment and newspaper design.

»Milo Shantz succumbs to cancer
The man whose name is synonymous with St. Jacobs passed away Jan. 6 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Milo Shantz was 76. Beginning with the opening of the Stone Crock Restaurant in 1975, he eventually transformed the village into an international tourist destination. In 1981, he launched Mercedes Corp, which focused on property development and promoting tourism. Along with brother Ross Shantz, he amassed extensive holdings in the village, including the St. Jacobs and Waterloo Farmers’ Markets, the Ontario Livestock Exchange and the St. Jacobs Outlet Mall. Twin City Harmonizers to kick off Christmas
The Twin City Harmonizers will be holding their annual Christmas concert at Calvary United church Dec. 5.
Formed in 1946, the Harmonizers are a 60-man chorus who sing a capella in the barbershop style. This year’s concert, “A musical winter wonderland,” includes quartets, octets, solos and audience participation. Special guests will be women’s quartet A Touch of Class.
Funds from the concert will be split evenly between Calvary’s building fund and the Harmonize for Speech fund. Tickets are $12.50 each, available at the church office or at the door. Showtimes are 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

October 12 | 10:30 AM | Pumpkins & Pipes
Five pumpkins and two steel pipes were stolen from a backyard on Peel Street near Sunset Drive in Winterbourne. Homeowners are unsure of the exact time of the theft but it occurred sometime over the previous two days.
October 11 | 2:17 AM | Wedding fight
Police were called to a dispute on Snowgoose Crescent, near Kingfisher Drive in Elmira when a fight broke out following a nearby wedding. When police arrived, five or six people were outside a home yelling and fighting and one male was pinned to the ground by another. A 28-year-old man was arrested and lodged in a Kitchener prison cell overnight until sober.
October 11 | 12:00 AM | Wedding drunk
<?php DisplayVotes(get_the_ID()); ?>A 20-year-old woman was arrested during a wedding for causing a disturbance outside the Blackforest Inn on Sawmill Road in Conestogo. The woman was charged with being drunk in public and for breaching previous court terms.
